The Power of Oracy in Education Workshop

In this workshop, participants explore the critical role of oracy in building student confidence, supporting deep content learning, and developing the language skills necessary for long-term academic success. They examine how purposeful talk, structured discussion, and intentional listening practices can be embedded across the curriculum to enhance both comprehension and expression. Through interactive activities and classroom-based examples, participants learn how to create opportunities for all students, especially Multilingual learners, to engage in meaningful academic conversations.

The workshop highlights practical strategies for scaffolding student talk, promoting equitable participation, and fostering a classroom culture where students feel safe to share ideas, take risks, and refine their thinking. Participants also consider how oracy strengthens connections between speaking, listening, reading, and writing, reinforcing language development across all domains. By focusing on oracy as a foundation for learning, participants leave with concrete tools and a clear vision for creating classrooms where every voice is valued, every student is heard, and every learner has the opportunity to thrive.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Create a classroom culture that encourages all voices to be heard
  • Recognize the importance of speaking and listening
  • Implement strategies to scaffold and enhance oracy skills
  • Tailor oracy strategies to support learners with diverse needs
  • 7:00pm – 10:00pm US CT
