Overview
Efforts to support language development may unintentionally lower the academic rigor of activities. This 3-hour professional learning session explores how Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) can help educators to support multilingual learners’ access to the cognitive complexity of grade-level academic standards while also supporting language development.
Participants will examine the distinction between difficulty and complexity, address common misconceptions about DOK, and analyze instructional tasks through a language-aware DOK lens. Educators will leave with practical strategies for adapting and evaluating standards-aligned tasks that maintain high cognitive demand while providing appropriate linguistic supports for multilingual learners.
