Instructional Planning Workshop

In this workshop, participants deepen their understanding of the key components of an effective English language development framework and how those components translate into intentional instructional planning. Using a structured planning template supported by guiding questions, participants examine how to design lessons and units that explicitly integrate language development with content learning. They explore how each element of the framework works together to support multilingual learners in building both comprehension and expression.

Participants make connections between language uses and meaningful culminating tasks, ensuring that instruction is purposefully aligned to what students are expected to produce. They identify and prioritize the language functions and features students need in order to successfully engage with and complete these tasks, and consider how to scaffold instruction over time to build toward independence.

Throughout the workshop, participants engage in collaborative planning, reflection, and application, using real classroom contexts to ground their work. Emphasis is placed on making language expectations clear, designing opportunities for authentic language use, and supporting students in developing increasingly complex and precise academic language.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate supports
  • Apply components of ELD frameworks to instructional planning
  • Determine the language use of a culminating task
  • Prioritize language functions and features to scaffold instruction
  • 9:00am – 12:00pm US CT
