Mathematical Reasoning Workshops

This workshop explores how mathematical reasoning and language development intersect through a functional approach. Participants will experience concrete-to-abstract learning strategies, analyze the language demands of mathematical tasks, and apply scaffolds to support multilingual learners in accessing rigorous content. Educators will leave with tools to integrate Key Language Uses (KLUs) and discourse strategies into their math instruction.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the connection between mathematical reasoning and language development
  • Identify and apply the Key Language Uses (Explain, Inform, Argue, Narrate) in math instruction
  • Analyze math tasks for linguistic and conceptual demands
