Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Workshops


This session introduces Webb’s Depth of Knowledge (DOK) as a tool for understanding and evaluating cognitive complexity in educational materials. Participants explore the distinction between difficulty and complexity, clarify common misconceptions about DOK, and examine its application to teaching and learning within a coherent education system.

Through analysis and practice, participants consider implications for curriculum, assessment, and instructional decision-making. The session equips participants to integrate DOK into their teaching practices.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Develop an actionable plan to implement or refine DOK practices in the classroom, school, or district.
  • Demystify DOK levels and uncover common misunderstandings.
  • Apply the DOK framework meaningfully across classroom contexts.
  • Explore high-leverage strategies for optimizing instructional decisions.
